  1. The fracture is no longer cultural.
It is civilizational, theological, and now armed.

Two distinct human subspecies now share the planet:

  • The Always-On (≈1.9 billion, mostly urban East Asia, coastal US/Europe, Israel, UAE)
    Average daily consciousness: 21.4 hours
Average age at death: 138 and rising
Religion: none, or ironic hyper-productivity cults
  • The Children of Night (≈4.8 billion, everyone else)
Average daily sleep: 6.9 hours and fiercely defended
    Average age at death: 94
Religion: Sleep is now the final sacrament

The war begins over street lights.

Phase 1 – The Luminosity Acts (2034–2036)

Singapore passes the first “24-Hour Daylight Ordinance” in March 2034:
Every public space must maintain ≥800 lux at all times to “optimise cognitive performance.”
Traditional street lamps are replaced with 4,000-K full-spectrum arrays that never dim.
Bird migration collapses.
Crime drops 41 %.
The 11 % of citizens who still prefer natural sleep riot for three nights, are gently tear-gassed by police wearing ultrasound patches, and lose.

South Korea follows in 2035.
Seoul becomes the first capital with no legal night-time.
Billboards read: “Darkness is a legacy bug.”

Phase 2 – The Night Preservation Movement

Rural France, Poland, and the American Midwest declare “Right to Darkness” zones:

  • All outdoor lighting after 11 p.m. limited to 0.3 lux (starlight levels
  • Always-On visitors must wear mandated “nocturnal inhibitors” (ultrasound-blocking earpieces)
  • Black-market trade in melatonin and weighted blankets explodes

By 2036 there are 41 sovereign “Night States” that refuse diplomatic recognition to any country running 24-hour lighting.
The Vatican moves permanently to a monastery in rural Portugal and declares artificial wakefulness “a sin against the Creator’s rhythm.”

Phase 3 – The Blackout Wars (2037–2041)

Always-On cities begin experiencing rolling sabotage:

  • Sleeper terrorists (average age 61) cut power trunks at 2 a.m.
  • Drones drop ferromagnetic dust on HVDC lines
  • Viral ultrasound-jamming tones are broadcast on pirate FM

Response is swift and merciless:
Seoul deploys autonomous drones that detect natural-sleep EEG signatures and forcibly apply 18-minute recharge pulses to anyone caught sleeping in public.
The procedure is marketed as “compassionate correction.”

World’s first fatality: a 59-year-old Polish farmer dies of cardiac arrest when a drone misfires the pulse.
Global headlines scream “Death by Wakefulness.”

Phase 4 – The Great Dimming (2042)

The Always-On win every battle and lose the war.

Productivity numbers are undeniable:
Always-On nations now produce 84 % of global GDP with 28 % of population.
Their citizens are richer, taller (epigenetic rejuvenation), and live to 150.

But fertility in Always-On zones falls below 0.4.
Night States, despite lower GDP, have fertility 1.6–1.9 and growing.

In 2042 the UN holds an emergency session titled “The Sustainability of Perpetual Day.”
The compromise is brutal in its elegance:

  • All outdoor lighting worldwide must follow natural solar cycles ±90 minutes
  • Always-On citizens are free to stay awake inside private dwellings
  • Public spaces return to true night between 23:00 and 05:00 local solar time
  • Enforcement via orbital mirrors that selectively block sunlight to non-compliant cities (China launches the constellation in 2043)

Seoul dims for the first time in nine years on January 1, 2044.
Citizens stand in the streets and cry without knowing why.

The new geography of time – 2045

  • Light Cities (Singapore, Shenzhen–Hong Kong, Tel Aviv–Dubai corridor): windows blacked out, internal lighting 24/7, population 1.1 billion, fertility 0.31
  • Night Cantons (Appalachia, rural Poland, Hokkaido, New Zealand South Island): no electricity after 10 p.m., fertility 2.4, population growing
  • The Twilight Belt (most of Africa, India, Latin America): hybrid zones where you can still choose)

The last natural sunset

Recorded June 12, 2047, from a monastery in Crete.
A 94-year-old monk, one of the last humans who has never used ultrasound sleep, watches the sun drop behind the Aegean and says on camera:

“I was born when night still belonged to God.
They took the dark from the sky, but they could not take it from my soul.”

He dies in his sleep that night, smiling.

The Always-On watch the clip 14 billion times in VR, slowed to 0.01× speed, trying to understand why their hearts suddenly hurt for something they chemically cannot feel.

The night has returned, but only where the sleepless allow it.
